Laser Hair FAQ

Laser hair removal can deliver long-lasting results, but to achieve that typically requires between six and nine treatments. In order to target hair follicles in different stages of growth, treatment sessions are scheduled four to eight weeks apart. However, depending upon your specific needs, you may need up to a dozen sessions to get silky smooth skin.

Several factors — including your skin color, the color and thickness of your unwanted hair and the area being treated – will play a role in determining the number of treatments you require. And while the results of laser therapy may not be apparent for a few weeks, but you can expect your unwanted hair to be less noticeable after each treatment. Much of it will never grow back, and any hair that does grow back will typically be much finer. This means you might not need to shave or wax ever again!

Laser therapy is not only safe and highly effective, but it is also gentle enough to be used on any area of the body – even spots where the skin is more sensitive. The underarms, legs, back and bikini line are common treatment areas, and many of our clients have us treat unwanted hair on the upper lip, chin and cheeks.

In addition to these traditional treatment areas, laser hair removal is an option for many other parts of the body. If you’re currently waxing, shaving or plucking the hair on your upper arms, hands, belly, buttocks or anywhere else, laser therapy is worthy of consideration. We can target any area, saving you from a lifetime of dealing with unwanted hair

Using laser pulses to destroy hair follicles sounds pretty painful, so you might be surprised to learn that laser therapy only causes slight discomfort. Some describe the sensation as feeling like tiny pinches or pin pricks, and our clients frequently remark that the procedure barely hurts.

Contrary to what many people think, laser hair removal actually hurts less than waxing – and since your technician may ice the treatment area after each session, you shouldn’t feel much pain. If you do, the intensity of the laser can be adjusted to ensure your comfort. The more treatments you receive, the more accustomed you’ll be to the feeling.

Before you can undergo laser therapy to remove unwanted hair, you’ll need to plan ahead. For the six weeks prior to your first treatment and between sessions, we ask our clients to avoid plucking, waxing and tweezing – these methods temporarily remove hair at the root, and the roots are what the laser targets. If necessary, however, you can shave the area being treated.

In the weeks before your appointment, steer clear of sun exposure, as we can’t treat tanned skin. If you decide to go outside, be sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen first. Also, we advise our clients to skip the self-tanners and discontinue using retinol, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and exfoliating products, as they can affect the results of laser therapy. And in the event that you are prescribed any antibiotics prior to coming in, you may need to adjust your treatment schedule to avoid the risk of a photosensitive reaction.

The day before each laser hair removal session, shave the area being treated. Shaving encourages the hair follicles to enter an active growth stage, making them easier for the laser to target. Clean the treatment area prior to each treatment, and refrain from applying any lotion, oil or fragrance of any kind.

In an ideal world, a single laser hair removal treatment would be sufficient to leave you with silky smooth skin. In reality, stopping after just one session would result in unwanted, visible growth as time goes on. Laser therapy is only a long-term solution with multiple treatment sessions.

The reason for this has everything to do with the hair growth cycle, which consists of three stages – the anagen, catagen and telogen phases. The laser is most successful in targeting hair in the anagen or active growing phase, but since each individual hair grows at a unique rate, there’s no time when all of your unwanted hair will be in the anagen phase. As such, numerous laser hair removal sessions are required to cover the entire treatment area.

Another variable that may have an impact is the size of the area being treated. We aim to make sure our clients are in and out of our office in under an hour, and in many cases, sessions take far less time than that. However, larger treatment areas like the legs or back can take far longer. Bearing that in mind, if you want laser therapy on a large area, you will likely need more treatment sessions.
